Today is the day to say “thank you mister computer guy” and think about his miserable life in the underground that als a TV show is made about them.

some time ago I wrote some lines about how to improve photos taken at events and about gear decisions. Today I try to write down my experience at a photoshooting and Nicu will follow some time *hint*.
Other then an event the photos at a photoshooting cost a bit more preperation. You have to look for at least one model you want to shoot. In our case we had several very nice girls and also some guys – all together 6. In addition a MakeUp Artist is allways a good-to-have thing, but often they want some money for the Equipment they use.

If you have more then one model its also good to have more than one photographer (in our case we were three) so there is no waiting time and everybody has something to do at the Set. The coordination for that should take place via Mailinglist or a forum (in our case a german social network) where all the infos can be posted and everybody in that small (closed) group has access to it. Sometimes you begin the project with 2-3 people and then some came later and you do not want to explain EVERYTHING AGAIN, so … you know the drill…

For the location with so many people its good to choose some outdoor location, because there is plenty room to take picture with all photographers paralell and the makeUp Artist can do her job also. We choose the Völklingen Ironworks. because it has different spots with different lights, backgrounds, etc. Depending on the location and maybe the region in the world you also should ask before the Shooting what is needed for a permission for photoshooting (at this place they are very experienced and had permission-forms for photographers). Also you should have Model Release forms for TfP shootings printed out for each model, photographer and the MakeUp Artist.

After arriving and shake-hands (if you do not meet before) we choose a central point where we can spread out from, had some place for the MakeUp Setup and also some place where the models can change.

After some short preperation time (change cloth, first MakeUp’s, etc.) we spread out – every photographer took one model, take the pictures, rotate, change MakeUp and clothes, etc. – and had fun. Be creative, look how the modell looks like and try some out. If the model is creative he/she has at least 2-3 Outfits in his/her bag and you can try out different looks.

Depending from the location try different angles, lenses (if you have), lights, etc. and take as much photos as you can. Mostly you did not have another Appointment where you all can come together. If possible try to shoot in RAW so that you can post-process and change minor failures you took at the shooting can be fixed easily without changing to much.

If its warm outside its good to have enough to drink, because you never know where the next Restaurant or shop is. Also prepare for the worst case: I had at least two sets of batteries with me and as much Storage (SD Cards) as I can get. Also check your Equipment twice and choose only the Equipment you want to really use. More Equipment means more weight to carry around and to take care of. For this Shooting I choose my backpack for the Equipment, because I also had to climb the pipes, crawling the tubes and want to have my hands free and all my gear with me when I go from one shooting-spot to another one.

You also want to be very flexible, because you did not know EXACTLY what you can expect (e.g. light and weather conditions). You can not allways check the location before the shooting, so it is good to have a backup plan or some ideas on the way to the location what you can use instead (in our case the Ironworks also had some Indoor rooms – not so perfect as the pipes and steel around, but for a backup plan ok).

After 6 hours of straight shooting and two short breaks for eating you may have about 20-50GB data (around 800-1200 photos) and you hopefully had much fun as well as some good shots…

Here are some shots I took. They are unedited (no cropping, color post-processing, effects, etc.) – that would be in the next part also as some kind of workflow for Picturemanagement.

After long time of preperation and communication over Mailinglists the new media for F13 is produced and ready to send out. I’m proud to be one of the first (besides to welcome our new Fedora Project Leader, Jared) who gets a package from Felix who acts as a kind of backup for Sascha, with the new CDs and DVDs here in germany. Here they are:

The Front Cover of the F13 Install DVD

Again with the DVD itself

The LXDE Live media CD

The XFCE Media.

Great work! The package was with around 100 media very heavy, so be carefull with heavy cargo

So, the events can come!

I also now can prepare some cool advertisement photoshootings with the new media I waited for so long for upcoming marketing material.

As I saw the mail I had a litle smile on my face, because as you can see the mail is written totally in german but “Ambassador” was twice in it. Did they look at Fedora? Are they seeing what an incredible success the fedora Ambassadors programm is and also want – as other opensource projects which look at us – that, too? are they implementing interresting keywords for SEO? Did’nt they know – as a german company – know the german expression for ambassador “Botschafter”? As I said if you think about it, its kind of funny… But nice.

Ok, some may think that its not THAT big gear, but I want to tell why I choose to upgrade my actual photogear any why in THAT way I did.
At the #fedora-art channel we have a small “which gear do you have” chat and some there convincedme to make a short blogpost. Maybe they follow up on this *hint*

First, the “Standard Layout”

I have a “Standard” Canos EOS cam with some standard 18-55mm lens. No big deal. But I want to be very flexible in the usage (change quickly for different situations) like on one day some portraits, on the other day some Streetfotography and on the third some stills and at night some red carpet and press footage shootings. So the following would be MY personal (that can and will differ from others I know e.g. kushal and nicu …) todays rig. I will explain some later…

So, here the explanations. First of all you would probably recognized that I taped the logo with black tape.Thats because nowadays people look concentrated at a camera and think “a, I know that model” or “Oh, what a nice thing” and sometimes want to talk with you about the cam. But most of the time you (in this case “I”) want to be some more guy in the crowd taking pictures. You should not recognize me so much. In pressphotography it could help (some give a sh** about it, but … anyway). Second thougts where about the lenses. I have a 50mm / f1,8 for portraits, the 18-55mm as “all day lens” and the 55-200mm (quick & dirty shots)/ f3-5,6 as my Tele (landscape, press, portraits). Then you can see a battery grip. I have that for two purposes: for once you get huge battery life so you can shoot over days without thinking “Oh, will my battery hold so long? do I have to charge? where is my poersupply?” and so on. The second thing is that it has a second shutter release button in the 90degree position so if you shoot in portrait format you must not bend your hands …

Then there is the flash trigger on the top. I decided to use several flashguns (at this time I have one Metz mecablitz from the 42series, one “old” analog Photo Porst Flashgun and one anlogish no-name with 6 (!) batteries in it) like these, because I can do portrait shootings, fashion, etc. and also have them e.g. at events placed behind big PA at the stage and have some mood backlight. I can carry only one for press coverage with me or several ones and position them carefully. Also if you shoot in the nature portable studio lights are mostly expensive and you have to carry them if you want longlife light. With 2-3 Flashguns and a 4-Chanel remote Trigger you can do much of the work you want. And if I want to do REALLY good pics … there are some studios here around which I can use. That will not necessary be all over the world, but … you know

Then there is that small thingy on the left side of the camera. Thats a small USB-stick sized video-cam which records the footage on a 4GB micro-sdhc card. So on fotoshootings or at press events I can film and shoot and have a kind of that someone else is filming. Also I can concentrate on the shooting itself and the extra cam do the rest.

Also that gear is as I said very flexible and small in packing. And Paul: Yes, you can order all over the iphone via amazon if you want or I can give you – and all others – some quite more inexpensive Links. Oh, I forget to mention that non of the additional parts (except the 50mm lens) is original brand. I’m only a poor little administrator guy … but if anybody think that I need an upgrade feel free to klick HERE and support me. Donations are allways welcome.

Maybe they will flow into F14 (we hope so!).

They can be found HERE.

As you can see after installation with the dependecies (just a few ones). you get all you need.

A great feature we found out was the lens distorsions:

Some of us and many more out there recognize maybe their own lens and can take a look how it will look if they have taken the e.g. pony plowing through the garden picture with THIS or THAT lens. It is definitly a working horse tool for “us” photographers and can compete with some commercial tools out there! The work of throwing pictures on a Lightning table is almost the same. Good look & feel.

Hope we get soon updates and many plugins

And if anybody likes a Badge-template … I have done some for an upcoming event as a proof-of-concept:

In the next days I try to upload the Sourcefile … I try …!

If you ever have wondered how you do some wiki editing without having an actual screenshot or Image you want to put in later and do not know how to work that out and everybody has other ideas how to stumble around this “problem” …?

I just put in the Image default.png into our Fedorawiki sou all you have to do ist to put into your actual wiki-code default.png at the place you want and you have a placeholder. No thinking about what to take for that …

Image:default.png

or

should do the trick very well.

I used it at the screenshot library and it seem to work very well so far.
